Community Recipes

Our founder Chitra Agrawal has been developing, teaching and serving Indian recipes using local ingredients since 2009 at The ABCD's of Cooking and most recently in her cookbook Vibrant India: Fresh Vegetarian Recipes from Bangalore to Brooklyn (Penguin Random House, March 2017). Below you will find some of her creations mixed in with recipes crowdsourced from our community, starting with tomato achaar ideas, followed by roasted garlic achaar, rhubarb ginger achaar and simmer sauce ideas.

Tomato Achaar Recipe Idea #1: Tomato Achaar Shakshuka

Shakshuka is a traditional Middle Eastern breakfast dish of eggs cooked in a spicy tomato sauce.  With our tomato achaar you can make a quick, flavorful version that has some Indian spice to it. Get the recipe here.


Tomato Achaar Recipe Idea #2: Cheddar, Cucumber, Achaar Tartine

This is a recipe we made for the holiday bazaar put on by Brooklyn Exposed and Made in Brooklyn.  It's perfect for serving as an appetizer at a party or for a quick lunch.

Spread your tomato achaar right on top of a slice of sourdough (can toast it if you like crunch), layer with sliced cheddar cheese & cucumbers. Enjoy!

Tomato Achaar Recipe Idea #3: Tomato Achaar Coconut Curry

This is a Thai-inspired tomato achaar and coconut milk curry recipe that appeared in a Marley Spoon meal kit. You can add veggies, tofu or chicken to the mix for a quick dinner over rice or noodles.  Get the recipe.

This is a ridiculously easy recipe idea using our tomato achaar but so delicious had to share it. Instead of topping your nachos with salsa, give it more kick with tomato achaar & throw on some avocado and sour cream for good measure:)

This recipe is the amazing work of chef and musician Oscar Michel out of Oakland. Add a little color and heat to your salad with just a bit of tomato achaar.

Go traditional with your use of our tomato achaar and top off rice and curry with it - you can't go wrong! Love eating rice and curry with a dollop of yogurt, which is a great combo with achaar as well.

Tomato Achaar Recipe Idea #14: The 'Delhi Turkey' Sandwich

The Williamsburg grocer, Depanneur used our tomato achaar to make a signature sandwich called The Delhi Turkey - turkey, hummus, tomato achaar, cucumber and arugula on a baguette.  Our local grocer, Greene Grape Provisions loved the idea so much they served a similar variation with roasted turkey, which sold out during their lunch rush!

Rhubarb Ginger Achaar Recipe Idea #1: Spicy Yogurt Dip

I grew up eating the flavors of my rhubarb ginger achaar mixed into yogurt - sometimes also with yogurt and rice. Of course that way is an old stand-by, but if you're looking to make a quick yogurt dip, just add 1 teaspoon of rhubarb ginger achaar to 1/3 cup of yogurt and voila! Goes great with tortilla chips, crunchy veggies or warm pita.

Rhubarb Ginger Achaar Recipe Idea #2: Summer Veggie Sandwich with Spicy Rhubarb Mayo

This sandwich has a spicy mayo made with our rhubarb ginger achaar (2 tsp mayo, 1 tsp rhubarb ginger achaar) along with thinly sliced cucumber and cooked beets and sharp cheddar cheese. So good!
